What is a QR code?

You may have already seen QR codes—those funny-looking, square barcodes. As smart phones become more prevalent, more businesses are using QR codes as part of their marketing and communications. But what are QR codes, how do you create them, and how can you use them to market your own small business?

QR stands for “quick response.” The QR code looks like a barcode that you can scan using a SmartPhone equipped with a camera. QR codes have been around since the 1990s but are just now becoming popular, spurred on by the growing proliferation of SmartPhones. You can use them to access all kinds of information, including web addresses, personal or professional contact information, Internet landing pages, and much more.

QR codes and similar 2-D tag technology have been slower to catch on in America. However, marketing professionals say the question isn't whether the codes will become as popular as they are in Japan but rather how quickly will they be a part of our every day life, just like browsing the Internet, sending emails and text messages.

The technology is simple to use and comes at little additional cost for your company and requires no special hardware. If done properly, adding a tiny square code to your packaging or marketing materials can open up a different spectrum of interaction with your current and potential customers. QR codes go far beyond traditional advertising methods and they add a sense of fun that turns advertising from a passive occurrence to interactive entertainment.

In the same way that websites, then MySpace URLs, and more recently Facebook and Twitter pages started appearing in TV, magazine and newspapers ads, we're starting to see more QR codes appear in traditional advertisements.

What is the best way to use a QR Code for your Business?

First, you need to determine if QR codes are a good fit for your business and your audience. More than likely there is a place for QR codes in your marketing plan, here are some innovative suggestions on how you can start using them.

  1. QR codes on your business cards. Instead of placing out business cards or even filling up your business card with all kinds of information you can create a QR code that allows them to automatically store your contact information in their phone. You can also create a QR Code that leads people to your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Yelp, FourSqure, and MySpace profiles.

  2. Build your Text Message and e-mail subscriber list. Use your QR code to send people to a landing page for your text message and email signup forn. Just make sure you give people a persuasive reason to subscribe to your list.

  3. Labeling with Codes. If you have a business that creates a label for your products your customers will notice the QR code on the product and quickly scan it. That takes them to a mobile site where they can learn more about your products, your company, and links to where they can make a purchase.

  4. Storefront displays. Not very many retail businesses are open 24/7. Now you can reach your potential customers after you've left for the day. Create a “Order Online!” QR code and put it in your storefront window.

  5. Promotions, discounts and giveaways. Create a QR Code and run these place them in your advertisements or post them throughout your store. You can also use this method to collect their name, mobile phone number, email address, opinions on your products and more.

  6. QR codes on T-shirts. Put your QR code on your t-shirts. You can also have your employees wear them while working or have them attend public events .

  7. Use QR codes to get more Likes and Follows. You can lead people to your Facebook and Twitter page for a quick “follow” or “like”. A “like” or “follow” on Facebook or Twitter can create a long-term marketing opportunity.

  8. Increase your e-commerce sales. Since QR codes can lead to website URLs, you can create a code that will allow people to instantly shop on your website or purchase a specific product and view the product details.

  9. Get your Phone Ringing or more Text Message subscribers. QR codes can also make a phone call. If you want to get more calls to your phone, you can create a code that will dial a preset number. QR codes can also generate SMS text messages to be sent.
